Roulette runs on a pretty simple game strategy. There is a spinning wheel, a dealer, a ball, and you. All you have to do is guess which numbered/colored spot the ball will stop at. The dealer drops the ball into one of the numbered spots in the spinning wheel, and you have a chance to bet on which spot the ball will land.

The dealer puts the ball in the opposite direction of which the roulette wheel is spinning. Putting the ball in an opposing direction ensures that the dealer has no control over which numbered spot the ball ends up in when the wheel stops spinning. In land-based casinos, you place bets with physical chips, while in online roulette, bets are placed with virtual chips.

In online roulette, there is a roulette table with numbers that correspond to the roulette wheel. There are different variants of roulette, and two major variants which other variants are based on are the European Roulette and the American Roulette. European Roulette has 37 numbers from 0-36 with colors red, black, and green.

American Roulette, on the other hand, has 38 numbers from 00-36. It is important to note these differences as it affects the house edge of each variant of roulette. European Roulette has a house edge of 2.7%, while the American Roulette has a higher house edge of 5.26%.

Roulette Betting Rules

Like most other casino games, roulette players are to obey the minimum and maximum betting limits of the roulette table. The amount you are placing as a bet should be the same or greater than the minimum bet limit and should not exceed the maximum bet limit. Ensure you place your bets before the dealer starts to spin the wheel.

Always wait till the wheels stop spinning before clearing out your wins. You will notice the different betting limits for inside and outside bets, which might be different from the table's minimum and maximum betting limits. Limits for the inside bet are usually lower than those for the outside bet because players have a chance of earning massive returns if they are correct with inside bets.

Straight bets typically have the lowest maximum limit because of the winning possibilities. Outside bets, on the other hand, tend to coincide with the table limit, depending on the roulette variant you are playing.

Roulette Betting Options

There are numerous ways of betting in roulette; you can choose to bet on a single number or different groups of numbers. There are numerous betting combinations with different winning odds and payouts you can try. Roulette betting options are divided into two; you can place an inside bet or an outside bet. If you look at the roulette table, you will find that a large part of the table has numbers 0-36, and the remaining parts allow you to bet on groups of numbers like odd/even, red/black, 1-18/19-36, columns and dozens.

Inside bets

The bet placed on individual numbers is referred to as inside bets, and it includes the following:

  • Straight up/ Single number: This bet covers only one number, and it pays out at odds 35:1. You place your chip on that number.
  • Split bet: This covers two adjacent numbers on the roulette table and pays out at odds 17:1. Place your chip on the line dividing the numbers to place your bet.
  • Street: This covers a row of three numbers, and you place the bet by placing your chip on the outer corner of the row. This bet pays out at odds 11:1.
  • Quarter: This is also known as a corner bet, and it covers a group of four numbers. You place your chip at the center where all the squares meet. This bet pays out at odds 8:1.
  • Six-line: This bet is a combination of two street bets (two rows of numbers). To place this bet, place your chip outer part of the line joining both rows. The bet pays out at odds 5:1.

Outside bets

This bet is placed outside the number area of the roulette table and placed on the grouped values. They include:

  • Dozen: This is placing a bet on one of the three dozens found on the table. Also, it is referred to as 12s. The payout ratio is 2:1.
  • Column: With column bets, you place a bet on any of the three columns. Like dozens, it pays out 2:1.
  • Red/black: Here, your bet is on which color the ball will land on, either red or black. The payout ratio is 1:1
  • Odd/Even: There are odd and even numbers in the roulette table. Place a bet on which category of numbers the ball will end up in. This bet pays out at 1:1.
  • High/Low: This bet covers half the board. It is also known as 1-18 or 19-36, with 1-18 being low and 19-36 being high.

History of Roulette

French mathematician Blaise Pascal stumbled on roulette during his search for a perpetual motion machine in the 18th century. Blaise's roulette wheel was an improvement of the gaming wheel used in an Italian game Biribi. The numbers on Blaise's wheel were 00 to 28, the pocket colors were black and red, and the green color was added at the beginning of the 1800s.

In the early American roulette, the numbers were 0, 00, 1 to 28, and an American Eagle. The American eagle increased the house edge. However, this changed when the slots in the roulette wheel became numbers only. Roulette became one of the most famous casino games around Europe and the US in the 19th century.

Strategies for playing online roulette

We mentioned that roulette is a game of chance. While being a game of chance, using some strategies will increase your chances of winning a game of roulette. Use these strategies when playing roulette to increase your chances of winning.

  • Bet according to your bankroll: Don't forget that roulette is a game of chance, so place bets based on how much risk you can handle. Don't go beyond your bankroll when making bets.
  • Place double dozen bets: Placing double dozen bets allows you to cover 24 numbers, a large part of the table with just two bets. Doing this gives you a higher chance of winning.
  • Play in sessions: Don't spend an extended period staring at the roulette wheel. Take breaks within sessions to ensure that you do not lose concentration while playing.
  • Use available bonuses: Using bonuses allows you to play roulette for as long as you want to with little risk. You can also use the bonuses to test strategies before playing with real money.
  • Know your odds: Learn the different types of roulette bets’ odds as they will help you form your strategy as you play.
  • Play variants with a lower house edge: Some roulette variants like the American roulette have a higher house edge than the European roulette. You should always check the house edge before playing any variant of roulette.

Roulette Bankroll Management

Remember that you have no control over the outcome of the roulette wheel. Don't get carried away while playing such that you lose your bankroll to the game. Whether you win or lose a roulette session, you will lose some money to the house edge.

Some roulette strategies require you to place large bets, meaning that once you lose, you lose a huge chunk of your bankroll. However, placing small bets will allow you to place multiple bets and lose less while at it. This is because the casino will also get little money when winning, and you will not be losing a lot of cash when you lose.

Divide your bankroll into different portions. Set aside the amount of money you will be using for each roulette session and stick to it. You can also allocate a part of your cash for your daily betting activities. If you would check out other online casino games like our online slots, setting aside the amount you will spend gives you more control.
